The Rainbow Fish
Activity: Listen and read the story.
The Rainbow fish story
A long way out in the deep blue sea there lived a fish. Not just an ordinary fish, but the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean. His scales were every shade of blue and green and purple, with sparkling silver scales among them. The other fish were amazed at his beauty. The called him Rainbow Fish. “Come on, Rainbow Fish,” they would call. “Come and play with us!” But the Rainbow Fish would just glide past, proud and silent, letting his scales shimmer.
One day, a little blue fish followed after him. “Rainbow Fish,” he called, “wait for me! Please give me one of you shiny scales. They are so wonderful, and you have so many.” “You want me to give you one of special scales? Who do you think you are?” cried the Rainbow Fish. “Get away from me!” Shocked, the little blue fish swam away. He was so upset; he told all his friends what had happened. From then on, no one would have anything to do with the Rainbow Fish. They turned away when he swam by. What good were the dazzling, shimmering scales with no one to admire them? Now he was the loneliest fish in the entire ocean.
One day he poured out his troubles to the starfish. “I really am beautiful. Why doesn’t anybody like me?” “I can’t answer that for you,” said the starfish. “But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave you will find the wise octopus. Maybe she can help you.” The Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was very dark inside and he couldn’t see anything. Then suddenly two eyes caught him in their glare and the octopus emerged from the darkness. “I have been waiting for you,” said the octopus with a deep voice. “The waves have told me your story. This is my advice. Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish. You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy.” “I can’t…” the Rainbow Fish started to say, but the octopus had already disappeared into a dark cloud of ink. Give away my scales? My beautiful shining scales? Never. How could I ever be happy without them?
Suddenly he felt the light touch of a fin. The little blue fish was back! “Rainbow Fish, please, don’t be angry. I just want one little scale.” The Rainbow Fish wavered. Only one very very small shimmery scale, he thought. Well maybe I wouldn’t miss just one.
Carefully the Rainbow Fish pulled out the smallest scale and gave it to the little fish. “Thank you! Thank you very much!” The little blue fish bubbled playfully, as he tucked the shiny scale in among his blue ones. A rather peculiar feeling came over the Rainbow Fish. For a long time he watched the little blue fish swim back and forth with his new scale glittering in the water. The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing, so it didn’t take long before the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by the other fish. Everyone wanted a glittering scale.
The Rainbow Fish shared his scales left and right. And the more he gave away, the more delighted he became. When the water around him filled with glimmering scales, he at last felt at home among the other fish. Finally the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left. His most prized possessions had been given away, yet he was very happy. “Come on Rainbow Fish,” they called. “Come and play with us!” “Here I come,” said the Rainbow Fish and happy as a splash, he swam off to join his friends.

In effect, this is a famous cartoon well known among children and that is the reason why I’m sure that it can attract them because it’s a motivating and funny activity that it can break the routine of the theory and writing class.
It’s
one activity of the type of large workgroups in which, the class will
participate all members, including the teacher.
This activity will
consist of:
- First step:
The teacher will give each student a piece of paper on which the lyrics of the
song are printed.
Then,
each student will read the song individually several times.
After
that, students will have to look up in the dictionary the words that they don’t
know their meaning and then, they will write down in their notebook.
- Second step:
Teacher will show in the television the “Sponge Bob” song video three times, so
that the students become familiar with the sounds and lyrics of the song.
At
this moment to have a relaxing and silent class environment will be essential to
promote students' attention to the song.
The
teacher's role in this activity is to develop a guiding and counselor learning
role through a close deal with the students.
- Third step:
we will sing the song together several times while clapping and will make choreography.
Actually, with this part of activity, students will enjoy playful and they will
develop teamwork capacity.
-
Fourth step: In this part activity, we
will make a question game so teacher will ask some funny questions to students about
Sponge Bob’s life.
It
will be in this game when the teacher will evaluate the knowledge acquired by
the students such as vocabulary, grammar (of indirect form), pronunciation… The
teacher will also correct the pronunciation with a friendly and constructive
way.
Students’ expected
outcomes:
-
An overview of the fun of learning English.
-
An improvement of the teamwork skills (with respect, tolerance, friendship ...)
-
Learn to actively form through various activities oral aspects of the language
such as new vocabulary, speaking and grammar (of indirect form).
-
The usefulness learning English for daily life.
Length of time:
The
activity will consist of two sixty minutes sessions of each:
First session
|
(30 minutes).
|
|
|
Second session: (60 minutes)
|
|
|
Description of the target group
|
The
classroom group will be formed of twenty-two students between eight
and nine years (third grade of Primary School). The vast majority of the
students are Spanish but there are four children of Moroccan origin.
In
this case, the school is located in a Catalan small town; so that we are
talking about bilingual students whose mother tongue is the Catalan.
In
any case, it should be noted that the group is completely adapted to diversity in
classroom, because they know each other and share knowledge from the Preschool
education.
There
is only one pupil with special educational needs; this child has an autistic
disorder. Then, this kid has an adapted curriculum and receives more
personalized attention through a guard person. But in any case, the activity is
fully adapted to improve his capabilities and he can perform it without any
problems.
Teaching/Learning objectives
|
Usually,
the first days learners are uncomfortable and stressed because they don’t know among
them but the teacher can be in a similar situation.
For
this reason, the first days of class are essential to know our students, but
also for the teacher to know them and be able to give guidelines to follow the
course.
Therefore,
it is very important, that the teacher adopt a positive attitude and a cheerful
and energetic mood, with the objective of creating a distended, of encouraging
and stimulating class environment from the beginning.
The main objective of this activity
is to reinforce the intrinsic, integrative and instrumental values of students
and motivate them so they can see learning English as something meaningful and
useful for their professional and personal life
This activity is appropriate to
reinforce the students’ intrinsic values known through the characters. In this
way, they can see English learning as something fun and interesting.
I think that this singing activity
and watching “Sponge Bob” video is fully connected to the extracurricular life
of our students since watching cartoons in their free time is one of their
preferences. It is for this reason that this task can contribute to increase
the integrative values of the
students.
Regarding the instrumental values it’s worth mentioning that this activity
can motivate and show students that learning English is something useful. In
this specific case, they will obtain much more information from one of their favorite
characters.
Classroom arrangement and materials used
|
For the
activity we will go to the music room as we need a clear space to move around.
And then, the students should be placed to large circle form and sat on the
ground.
The materials we will use are:
o
Television
o
DVD
o
